The Second Edition of Contemporary Musicianship presents traditional music theory and analysis in an innovative manner, combining music history, popular culture, and composition in order to reach a broader audience: the non-music major and the music business/industry student. This book seeks to teach students the basic principles of music theory while incorporating the great works of classical performers and popular artists. Each chapter is designed around a specific theoretical topic, similar to many written theory textbooks currently in use. However, the approach presented in Contemporary Musicianship allows for in-depth study of performances or songwriting techniques and how a specific theoretical principle is used in the music.

Introduction to contemporary composition through the analysis and writing of short studies and through supervised original projects. Two lecture hours and one laboratory hour a week for one semester. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Music 411 and 612, or consent of instructor.
